SUMMARY:Lives at Stake: A Community Conversation On Mass Incarceration
DESCRIPTION:The Jamaica Plain Progressives are working with JP Forum and other local community organizations to host a conversation about the impacts of mass incarceration and what we can do about it. The forum will be held at First Baptist Church on Thursday\, June 16 at 7:00pm. \nThere is a growing recognition of the damage mass incarceration is doing\, especially in communities of color where 3 in 4 black men spend time in prison — not only impacting their families while they are imprisoned\, but making it extremely difficult to find housing\, employment and education after release. Some national leaders are acknowledging the mistake of “tough on crime” legislation. Many states have already started rolling back that legislation\, but Massachusetts has been slow to respond. We want to know why and how we can change that dynamic.  \nThis conversation will be keynoted by Rahsaan Hall\, the Director of the ACLU Racial Justice Program. He’ll be joined on the panel by Senator Sonia Chang-Díaz\, sponsor of several pieces of criminal justice reform legislation\, Sheriff Steven Tompkins\, who is leading reform in Suffolk County prison\, and Conan Harris\, the City of Boston Deputy Director of Public Safety Initiatives. The conversation will be moderated by Melissa Threadgill of the Crime and Justice Institute.

DESCRIPTION:A Brown Bag Lunch Conversation with Didier Jacobs\, Senior Economist\, Oxfam USA \nSpace is limited – Please RSVP to chuck@ips-dc.org\nPlease bring your lunch –and we’ll have drinks to share \nJacobs is the author of the Oxfam Discussion Paper “Extreme Wealth Is Not Merited” \nExtreme wealth evokes images of both deserving entrepreneurs and fat cats. In his paper\, Didier Jacobs parses them out both theoretically and empirically and makes the ethical case against extreme wealth from the perspective of meritocracy. It reviews several sources of extreme wealth through an analytical framework dubbed “the ladder of demerit.” The six rungs of the ladder—from higher to lower—consist of crime\, cronyism\, inheritance\, monopoly\, globalization\, and technology. The higher rungs are clearly not meritocratic. The lower ones reward talented people multiple times what can be justified based on merit. Empirical evidence\, drawn largely from Forbes’ list of billionaires\, provides a tentative indication of the relative importance of each rung. Fifty percent of the world’s billionaire wealth is found to be non-meritocratic owing to either inheritance or a high presumption of cronyism. Another 15 percent is not meritocratic owing to presumption of monopoly. All of it is non-meritocratic owing to globalization. By contrast\, crime and technology are found to be negligible sources of extreme wealth.

These numbers have been skyrocketing–in 2014\, the number of confirmed cases of unintentional opioid overdose deaths climbed 63% over 2012 levels and 20% over 2013. \nJoin us at the JP Forum on January 14 for a conversation about new approaches to addiction and treatment. We’ll learn that while headlines have focused on the growing numbers of overdose deaths from opiates and the related trends of prescription drug abuse\, there have been dramatic shifts in our understanding of both addiction and treatment options. \nOur panel will include four professionals who have distinctive experiences with key aspects of this change: \n\nMA State Representative Liz Malia (D-Jamaica Plain)\, House Chair of the Joint Committee on Mental Health and Substance Use\nHonorable John E. DESCRIPTION:Climate change caused primarily by the burning of fossil fuels is probably the most important issue that humanity faces in this century. One effective way to reduce the emissions of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases is to put a price on them\, a price high enough to motivate residents and businesses to find ways reduce their output of these gases. \n \nBills have been introduced in the Massachusetts Legislature to put a price on greenhouse gas pollution\, but they have not yet been voted on. \nThe panelists\, all of whom are actively working to prevent climate change\, will discuss the need for a price on carbon in Massachusetts and beyond\, and how to press the Legislature to make Massachusetts the first state to put it into law. His latest book explores the economic impact of hosting the Olympics and the World Cup.  He has found that\, in most cases\, host cities have reaped no economic benefits from hosting. Zimbalist recently testified before a joint session of the Massachusetts legislature about Boston’s potential bid to host the 2024 Summer Games. In an op-ed he published in The Boston Globe\, Zimbalist takes issue with the “American exceptionalism” argument\, advanced by Boston 2024\, that Olympics staged in the U.S. have historically performed better economically than other countries.  Zimbalist is the Robert A. Woods Professor of Economics at Smith College in Northampton\, MA.
