DESCRIPTION:Today in Massachusetts\, opiates kill three people per day. These numbers have been skyrocketing–in 2014\, the number of confirmed cases of unintentional opioid overdose deaths climbed 63% over 2012 levels and 20% over 2013. \nJoin us at the JP Forum on January 14 for a conversation about new approaches to addiction and treatment. We’ll learn that while headlines have focused on the growing numbers of overdose deaths from opiates and the related trends of prescription drug abuse\, there have been dramatic shifts in our understanding of both addiction and treatment options. \nOur panel will include four professionals who have distinctive experiences with key aspects of this change: \n\nMA State Representative Liz Malia (D-Jamaica Plain)\, House Chair of the Joint Committee on Mental Health and Substance Use\nHonorable John E. McDonald\, Jr.\, Boston Municipal Court\, East Boston Drug Court Division\nHenrietta Robin Barnes\, M.D.\, JP resident\, primary care physician\, and author of the newly released Hijacked Brains: The Experience and Science of Chronic Addiction\nWindia Rodriguez\, North East and Boston Regional Coordinator of Massachusetts Organization for Addiction Recovery (MOAR)\n\nJamaica Plain’s own State Representative Liz Malia\, a longtime activist in this area and House Chair of the Joint Committee on Mental Health and Substance Use will join Dr. Robin Barnes and other substance abuse specialists to share their perspectives on this important social and health issue. DESCRIPTION:Climate change caused primarily by the burning of fossil fuels is probably the most important issue that humanity faces in this century. One effective way to reduce the emissions of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases is to put a price on them\, a price high enough to motivate residents and businesses to find ways reduce their output of these gases. \n \nBills have been introduced in the Massachusetts Legislature to put a price on greenhouse gas pollution\, but they have not yet been voted on. \nThe panelists\, all of whom are actively working to prevent climate change\, will discuss the need for a price on carbon in Massachusetts and beyond\, and how to press the Legislature to make Massachusetts the first state to put it into law. In an op-ed he published in The Boston Globe\, Zimbalist takes issue with the “American exceptionalism” argument\, advanced by Boston 2024\, that Olympics staged in the U.S. have historically performed better economically than other countries.  Zimbalist is the Robert A. Woods Professor of Economics at Smith College in Northampton\, MA.

DESCRIPTION:First Church JP\nRSVP on Facebook \nHaitian-made documentary films go beyond the earthquake devastation and relief efforts to provide unseen local perspectives on the capacity of Haitians and the challenges they face. \nInspired by the model of Community Supported Agriculture\, Community Supported Film (CSFilm) applies the principle of investing in people on the ground by supporting the creation of locally-produced films.  The resulting products help nourish a deeper understanding of the world that isn’t available in the mainstream media marketplace. \nIn 2014\, CSFilm conducted an intensive 5-week training of 10 Haitian women and men in documentary production.  A collection of ten remarkable short films\, Haitian Perspectives in Film was produced during the training.  CSFilm founder and director Michael Sheridan will present a screening of these films and will discuss how stories told by Haitians themselves can augment our understanding of Haiti’s post-earthquake relief efforts and provide a chance for us to experience Haiti as it is lived by Haitian street vendors\, business women\, artists\, and farmers. \nGoing beyond disaster reporting\, these films will ensure the experiences and points of view of Haitians are included in the international conversation about what has and has not happened since the 2010 7.0 earthquake – one of the world’s worst disasters.  The films will also be used to increase dialogue and influence public policy internationally and in Haiti regarding effective foreign aid and sustainable development. \n

DESCRIPTION:First Church JP \nRSVP on Facebook  \n“I don’t mind new people coming into the neighborhood\,” said one young man\, the third generation in his family raised in a rapidly gentrifying community\, “but I do mind their coming with a sense of entitlement.” \nSweeping dynamics of global change manifest as very local tensions. Neighbors long familiar with each other’s ways become challenged by newcomers’ expectations and demands. Played out without consideration\, these tensions grow into painful conflicts. \nBut it is possible for communities to come together in respect for the needs of all residents\, both old and new. It is possible for people to grow and for community life to benefit from honest contention that is respectfully shared. \nAt the JP Forum\, Beth Roy will talk about an example of such an approach when she mediated an intense dispute in a San Francisco neighborhood. Drawing on her mediation there\, she extracts directions for re-thinking facets of the work with a social justice perspective. \nBeth Roy\, PhD\, is a long-time mediator in the San Francisco Bay Area. Trained as a sociologist at University of California\, Berkeley\, she teaches there in the Peace and Conflict Studies program. She writes books on social conflict\, including 41 Shots….and Counting: What Amadou Diallo Teaches Us About Policing\, Race\, and Justice (Syracuse University Press\, 2008). A detailed case history and training aid\, The Bernal Story: Mediating Class and Race in a Multicultural Community\, was published this year by Syracuse University Press. Dr. Roy is a co-founder of the Practitioners Research and Scholarship Institute (PRASI)\, a network of writers dedicated to supporting academic and other professional authors to regard lived experience as the basis of research and to write their knowledge for publication. She co-edited Re-Centering Culture andKnowledge in Conflict Resolution Practice (Syracuse University Press\, 2008).

DESCRIPTION:RSVP on Facebook  \nJoin the Jamaica Plain Forum in welcoming world reknowned permaculture and ecology expert Toby Hemenway.   \nIt’s no secret that our society has become unsustainable. Modern agriculture\, industry and finance all extract more than they give back\, and the Earth is starting to show the strain. How did we get in this mess? And\, more importantly\, what can we do to help our culture get back on track? \nThe ecological design approach known as permaculture offers powerful tools for the design of regenerative\, fair ways to provide food\, energy\, livelihood\, and other needs while letting humans share the planet with the rest of nature. This presentation will give you insight into why our culture has become fundamentally unsustainable\, and offers ecologically based solutions that can help create a just and sustainable society. \n\nJamaica Plain New Economy Transition (JP NET) and Boston Nature Center are hosting Toby Hemeway for a day long workshop titled “Urban Permaculture for a Fear-Free Future” on Saturday\, February 7th\, from 9:30-4:30pm.  For registration info please click here. RSVP for the workshop on Facebook here.  \n\nToby Hemenway is the author of Gaia’s Garden: A Guide to Home-Scale Permaculture\, which was awarded the Nautilus Gold Medal in 2011\, was named by the Washington Post as one of the ten best gardening books of 2010\, and for the last eight years has been the best-selling permaculture book in the world. Toby has been an adjunct professor at Portland State University\, Scholar-in-Residence at Pacific University\, and has taught over sixty 72-hour permaculture design courses. He has presented lectures and workshops at major sustainability conferences such as Bioneers\, SolFest\, and EcoFarm\, and at Duke University\, Tufts University\, University of Minnesota\, University of Delaware and many other educational venues. His writing has appeared in magazines such as Natural Home\, Whole Earth Review\, and American Gardener.  Toby and his wife\, Kiel\, spent ten years creating a rural permaculture site in southern Oregon. They then moved to Portland\, Oregon in 2004\, where Toby spent six years developing urban sustainability resources. Toby and his wife now live in Sebastopol\, California. His new book on urban permaculture\, The Permaculture City\, will be coming out in mid-2015. \n\n\n

DESCRIPTION:First Church JP\, 6 Eliot Street \n \nIn the face of catastrophic climate change\, some have suggested that nuclear power is a carbon-free solution.  Is nuclear power a viable carbon-free option?  What are the risks nuclear power and of the existing Pilgrim plant?   Come join this important forum. \nThirty-five miles away from Jamaica Plain sits Pilgrim Nuclear Power Station in Plymouth\, the only operating nuclear power plant in Massachusetts\, built in 1972.  Operated by the Louisiana-based Energy Corporation\, the Pilgrim plant is the same design (General Electric Mark 1) as the power plants that melted down in Fukushima\, Japan.  Should this plant continue to operate? \nJoin local activists and experts for this important conversation. \n

We’ll hear some juicy stories from our editors and contributors and\, if you are so inclined\, participate in our mini-Story Slam with your own 3 minute stories. \n \nThe stories in Class Lives are both gripping and inspiring. This anthology of narratives dramatizes the lived experience of class in America. Forty original essays from authors who represent a range of classes\, genders\, races\, ethnicities\, ages\, and occupations across the United States. Born into poverty\, working class\, the middle class\, and the owning class—and every place in between—the contributors describe their class journeys in narrative form\, recounting one or two key stories that illustrate their growing awareness of class and their place\, changing or stable\, within the class system. \nWhy focus on drawing out people’s class stories? Hearing stories from across the class spectrum opens up hearts and minds to class analysis\, and inspires cross-class solidarity and action to close the economic divide.
